Chapter 11: The Deal
Perry turned the phone face down on the long table.
"Everything okay, hon?" asked the tap mom from Albany Park.
"Fine," he said. "Wrong number."
He sewed sequins for another hour with his hands shaking so badly he stabbed himself twice.
At eleven-thirty the last tap mom kissed his cheek and went out with her casserole dish.
The woman in green was the last of the wolf mothers to go.
She stopped at the door and breathed in once.
"He's coming," she said quietly. "Your Alpha. He's two blocks away."
Then she went out into the cold.
Brianne was stacking folding chairs. Her son had gone home an hour ago with a tap mom who lived on her block.
Perry showed her the photo.
She looked at it for a long time.
Then she set the chair down.
"I'm staying," she said.
The bell over the door rang at eleven-forty.
Garret came in with snow on the shoulders of his black coat.
He stopped just inside the door.
He could smell it on Perry, Perry thought. Whatever Perry was feeling. Garret had always been able to.
"Perry."
Perry held up his phone with the photo on it.
"What did you sign?"
Garret looked at the photo.
He didn't ask where it had come from.
"Rodney," he said.
"What did you sign, Garret?"
Garret took his coat off slowly and laid it over the back of a folding chair.
"My grandmother called me to Lake Forest on Friday night. She had a paper ready." He kept his eyes on Perry's. "She said she and Rodney would withdraw the petition. No surgery. No court on the Cold Moon. Nobody puts a knife in you."
