Chapter 14: The Proxy
Rhys's POV
My father revoked the proxy at eleven twenty-two on Friday morning.
It took him four minutes to say the sentence.
My mother did not interrupt him once, because the lawyer had put a hand on her arm, and because the whole board was leaning forward to hear.
"I take back," my father said, and stopped, and began again, "what I gave."
The nurse held the paper under his good hand and he signed it.
It was crooked, and it was his.
The vote, counted again, was four to five.
The motion failed.
My mother said the meeting was adjourned, and her voice was perfectly level, and she walked out past his wheelchair without turning her head.
That is what happened in the boardroom, and Signe saw all of it.
What she did not see, and what I did not know how to tell her, was Sunday.
I had driven to the care house in Milton-Freewater every Sunday for two months.
I had not told my mother, and I had not told anyone.
Two weeks ago my father had looked up at me from his chair and said "Rhys" without a break.
It was the first time in six years that I had heard him say my name.
In three-word pieces he told me he had known about the sale for months, before I did.
