Chapter 19: Over the Kennels
The Marchioness of Morcaine received Ianthe in her morning room at half past seven.
She hadn't been asleep either.
She was sitting by a cold grate in the same grey dress, with a deerhound's collar in her lap.
"He's at the War Council," she said before Ianthe had sat down. "He went at six. He won't be back till noon."
"I'm sorry about your dog."
The Marchioness turned the collar over in her fingers.
"Nobody else said that. Not one person in that room yesterday."
Ianthe sat down across from her.
"There's a room over your kennels," she said. "With a padlock on the outside of the shutter."
The Marchioness went very white.
"I'm not supposed to know about that room."
"But you do."
She looked at the collar for a long time.
"The key hangs in the kennel-man's hut," she said at last. "On a nail behind the door. He's at the market till nine."
Then she stood up.
"I'll take you. If I send you alone, they'll say you stole it."
They went out through her garden in the snow, two ladies taking the air.
The kennels stood at the bottom of it, by the river, low and long and stinking.
