Chapter 11: Inspection
At five to seven Hakon was dressed in three layers of wool and could not stop sweating.
"Take off the scarf," Joren said.
"No," Hakon said.
"It's a warm room," Joren said.
"I know it's a warm room. That's the problem."
He sat at the desk with his back to the door and a book open in front of him.
He had not read a word of it.
Under the wool and under the shirt, a silver crescent was lit on his hip.
Joren had made the beds.
He had hung the coats and put the salve tin in the cupboard.
He had kicked his belt under his own mattress.
Now he stood at Hakon's shoulder in the black guard's coat with the high collar buttoned.
His own mark glowed under his shirt, and his own coat hid it.
He had put his palm against Hakon's hip for one moment as they dressed, and the light had dimmed under his hand.
"It works," he said. "A mate's touch quiets it. Keep your hand there if it flares."
"And you?"
"I've had more practice."
Someone knocked.
The Dean of Moonward came in first, a harried grey man with a ring of keys, apologising before he had crossed the threshold.
