Chapter 13: Account G

Eighty-four lines.

I went over them twice on the leather couch in Marco's office on the fortieth floor, and the number did not change.

Each line held a date, ten thousand dollars, and four columns of twenty-five hundred.

Beside every column sat a single initial in blue ink.

M. D. L. N.

Nico's handwriting was small and square, the writing of a boy who had been told to show his work.

The first line was dated the week we buried my father.

The last was dated the first of September.

On the right-hand pages, crowded close beside the money, ran more small writing.

I could not make my eyes read it.

It was past ten at night, and the whole Strip blazed in the glass behind Marco's desk.

The four of them had followed me up from the hill without a word and given me the room.

Marco stood at the window with his jacket off.

Dario leaned on the wall by the door, with no joke anywhere on his face.

Luca stood beside the couch, and Nico stood beside Luca with his glasses in his hand.

I shut the ledger.

"Nobody lies to me," I said.

Nobody moved.

"That was the rule. I said it on my own front step, with my back against the door. Marco said done."

"I did," Marco said.

"You said it after seven years of lying to me."

"Gemma," Marco said.

"Every first Sunday I put my little envelope in his hands and thanked him. You sat there. All four of you."
