Chapter 23: The Purge

For one second nobody moved.

Then the chapel was all noise.

Cadets stood up on the pews to see. Somebody screamed. The priest dropped his book.

Varrick was already on one knee beside my father.

"The King's heart," he called out. "Give him air. Fetch the doctor from the village."

The village was an hour down the cliff road.

My father would be dead in an hour.

I was out of the pew before I'd decided anything.

Lysander was ahead of me. Roan was behind.

The two guards in Aldermoor white had my father by the shoulders. His lips were blue. His chest barely moved.

"I'm a healing cadet," Lysander said. "Second year. Let me through."

"Stay back, Ingleby," Varrick said. "This is no place for students."

My father's eyes opened a slit.

They found me over Varrick's shoulder.

"The boy," he whispered. "Let the boy."

The guards in white looked at each other.

Then they looked at Varrick, who had no right to give them orders and knew it.

"His Majesty has spoken," one of them said.
