Chapter 17: The Roan Hears
The Roan elders sat down at the long table on the Sunday before Christmas, six of them, in their church clothes.
I stood at the hearth beside Duncan and kept my hands to myself.
He had not told me what he meant to say.
He had only asked, that morning, if I would stand where I could be seen.
"I want to tell you something my father kept," Duncan said.
He stood with his coat off, in his shirtsleeves, in front of the fire.
Behind the elders, along the walls of the great room, the pack had come to listen.
There were a hundred wolves there, and not one of them moved.
"When I was nine, the old shaft at Cranberry came down on me," he said. "You all know that."
Nobody answered.
