Chapter 18: Stairs
We came in from the Christmas Eve candles through the kitchen, with wax still on my fingers.
Dessie had gone to the great room with the pie.
The back stairs were dark, narrow and steep, and they smelled of woodsmoke and bread.
I got three steps up and could not take another.
I turned around.
Duncan was one step below me, which put his mouth level with mine.
"Dovie," he said.
I took his face in both hands and kissed him.
I kissed him with all the hunger of a whole month of candles and hymns and sitting beside him in a pew with my knees pressed to his.
He groaned into my mouth and his hands closed on my hips.
"Not here," he said, hoarse. "Upstairs."
"Here."
"Dovie, anybody could..."
"Dessie's got the pie. They'll all be eating for an hour." I bit his lower lip. "Here. Now. On these stairs."
His eyes went black.
I sat down on the step behind me and pushed my church dress up around my waist.
I had on stockings and nothing else under it.
He went very still.
"I thought about this through the whole sermon," I said. "Your mouth. Down there. You're going to kneel."
He went down on his knees on the stair below me without a word.
He hooked my knee over his shoulder and pressed his face between my thighs.
I grabbed the wooden rail with one hand and his hair with the other.
He was not slow this time.
He ate me hungrily, with long, wet, greedy strokes, and a low sound in his throat that I could feel through my whole body.
The narrow walls threw my cries back at me.
His tongue flicked my clit fast and hard, and I rocked against his mouth.
