Odalie's POV

Remy put me behind him before I could say a word.

I let him, for about as long as it takes to draw a breath.

Then I stepped around.

"Don't do that," I said.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"I'm not mad.

"I'm saying it's my shed."

"It's your shed," Remy agreed.

Through the open bay door we watched Marguerite Thibodeaux walk up the lane in the headlights with the silk flag over her arm.

She did not come to the oyster shell this time.

She stopped thirty feet short, in the middle of the road, and the twenty wolves behind her fanned out in a quiet line.

They looked like people who had eaten well all their lives.

I saw the old man with the cane and two women I remembered from the Fourth of July boil.

They were the families nearest the Luna's table, the ones who had always been given the Tithe's share.

I had not understood that until I saw them in the light beside my thin wolves.

"Remy," Marguerite called.

"I won't ask you to come back, because I know you won't.

"I'll ask you to let me say a word to this girl before the new moon."

"There's nothing to say," Remy said.

"Then I'll say it," I said.

I walked out onto the gravel.

I could feel Remy behind me, close, not touching.

"You've got a new flag," I said.

"The old one stank," Marguerite said.
