Chapter 13: The Pistol
Caspian's POV
The lift doors closed on her, and my arm lit up.
It lit from the wrist to the shoulder, red under the skin, for the first time since the night she came to my quarters.
I stood in the corridor and let it climb.
"Sir," Dax said.
"I'm fine," I said, which was not true, and he knew it.
The Meridian reached Aurel Station three days later under Fleet tow, with her guns locked and the inspector's marines on the bridge.
I held the Surge down by hand for all of them.
Every hour I reached for the place on my wrist where she put hers, and found only my own pulse.
The docking gallery was full when I walked down the ramp.
There were cadets in ranks along both rails and press drones overhead, and every screen on the concourse carried my face.
Admiral Maltravers stood at the foot of the ramp in his white coat, with a ceremonial guard behind him.
He looked at my arm first.
"Commander Roark," he said. "You destroyed Fleet property in front of your crew."
"I did."
"You also stood by while a Fleet warrant was served on your ship, and a man of yours stepped toward my marines." He turned his head. "Chief. Step forward."
The gunnery chief came out of the line at the bottom of the ramp.
He was the biggest man on my ship, and he stood at attention with his hands open at his sides.
"Obstruction of a warrant is mutiny," Maltravers said. "A commander may discipline mutiny on his own deck, here, today. I would call it a courtesy to let you do it."
