Chapter 15: Under Oath
They tried me in the same hall where they had read my zero.
The same gold light came down from the ceiling, and the same screens hung on every wall, showing the Concord a small woman in a grey prisoner's smock.
The seats were not full this time.
They were fuller.
I walked down the aisle between two marines, and nobody laughed.
Caspian sat in the witness row with Dax and the whole Ninth Wing crew packed behind him in their black coats.
He had no bars on his collar.
His left sleeve was dark with sweat from the shoulder to the cuff, and I could see the red light through the cloth.
He looked at me, and the light on his arm dimmed by half.
I kept walking.
Three judges sat at the long bench, and the presiding one read the charge in a flat voice.

Admiral Maltravers sat at the prosecution table in his white coat with his hands folded.

"She told me years ago, Your Honor, that she could turn her own signal down," he said. "I thought it was a joke. She was a quiet girl who liked to be difficult."
"Did she say why?"
"She said she never wanted to be a Fleet wife." He bowed his head. "I loved her. I'm sorry to be the one to say it."
I heard a sound beside me, and it was the marine on my left, breathing out through his nose.
"Miss Hargreave may question the witness," the judge said.
I stood.
"Captain Ames," I said. "You say I hid my signal for years."
"Yes."
"I was held back from testing for three years by a fever. You came to see me every week of it. Who tested me in that time?"
