Chapter 12: Gestational Carrier
The envelope was waiting in the bakery's mail slot when we got home that night.
Isaac read it first.
He read it twice.
Then he handed it to me without a word.
GESTATIONAL CARRIER AGREEMENT.
Twelve pages.
I, Lillian Thurston, agree to carry and deliver children for the Lindell family.
I understand that I am not the intended parent of any child born under this agreement.
I waive all parental rights, now and in the future.
In exchange, fifty thousand dollars per child. One hundred and fifty thousand in total.
There were three receipts stapled to the back, one for each boy.
Each one said Paid in cash, in Elaine's tidy handwriting.
Each one had my signature underneath.
It looked exactly like mine.
It should have. Elaine had six years of birthday cards and school forms and pediatrician paperwork with my name on them.
The motion on top asked the court to find that I was never the boys' mother in any legal sense.
It asked for sole custody to Peter.
It asked that I be ordered to repay the hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
"She wants me to give back the money," I said. "Money I never got. For children I'm not allowed to call mine."
