Chapter 20: The Cell
The cells under Highcourt were older than the palace.
They faced each other across a passage just wide enough for a gaoler with a lamp.
They put Corvus in the one opposite Seren's.
He sat on the stone with his back to the wall and his irons in his lap.
When the guards had gone, he looked across at Seren through the two sets of bars.
"Seven of them stood up," he said.
"Seven of them stood up, and he hanged us anyway."
"You made him do it in front of them."
"I know. It was the plan."
"It's a very bad plan."
"It's not finished."
Corvus laughed, low, in the dark.
The gaoler sat on a stool at the end of the passage with his lamp and his keys.
He was a grey man with farmer's hands.
When the herald read out the dead of Fenford in the hall, Seren had seen him at the doors with his hat against his chest.
"Twenty-eight," Corvus said quietly.
