Chapter 21: Election Night

The coach's office smelled like old tape and burnt coffee.

Colby had asked me to come, so I sat in a plastic chair by the door with my hands between my knees.

The coach sat behind a desk covered in clipboards and laid my brother's phone face-up in front of him.

He had read the whole thread.

He read the last message again, and put the phone down.

"The league has no rule against it," he said. "There never was."

Colby stared at him.

"You hid it for seven years from a man who'd have put the plays on shapes the day you told him."

"My dad said..."

"Your dad was scared for you, son. I'm sorry he was." The coach rubbed his face. "I put those color rings together. The swapped cards were on me, and I'm fixing it tomorrow. Numbers and shapes, every card."

"Coach."

"What isn't mine to fix is the other part." He pointed one thick finger at the window. "Somebody out there is going to say it for you, or you can say it yourself. I'd pick the second."

My brother looked at me.
