Chapter 12: The Report

Philip found out where Felicity had gone by seven the next morning.

Caleb had signed her out himself, taken her to his own apartment, and turned off both their phones.

"She's safe," Philip told me. "He won't say more. He'll come at ten."

He did.

The family doctor arrived at five to, a gray-haired man with a leather case, and swabbed the inside of my cheek in the drawing room while Polly watched from Douglas's lap.

"Does it hurt?" she asked.

"It tickles," I said.

"Can I have one?"

"You'll get one," said the doctor, and he gave her a stuffed lamb out of the case along with the swab.

Philip went next, then my mother, then Polly, who held the lamb and told the doctor it was named Tiger Two.

Caleb came in last, in sunglasses and the same gray hoodie.

He did not look at me.

He opened his mouth for the swab and shut it again.

"I'll want the results the minute they come," my mother said. "Pay for the rush."

"It will take until this evening," said the doctor.

We waited in the house, because none of us could go anywhere else.

My mother made tea and nobody drank it.

Douglas sat on the arm of the sofa with Polly building a block tower on his knee.

Every so often our eyes met across the room, and I looked away, and I felt my face warm.

Caleb stood at the window with his back to us and did not speak all afternoon.

At six, the doctor's phone buzzed.
