Chapter 7: Rain at the Door

I went to the hospital because I did not want anyone to say I hadn't.

Philip was in the corridor outside the room with his coat still on.

Caleb sat on a bench against the wall with his elbows on his knees, not looking up.

Douglas stood by the window with his arms crossed.

A doctor in a white coat came out and said Felicity had swallowed a handful of sleeping pills, that her stomach had been pumped, and that she would be fine by morning.

"She's asking for her brother," the doctor said.

Caleb went in without a word.

Philip turned to me.

His face was gray and his voice came out low and shaking.

"Are you satisfied?"

"I didn't give her anything."

"She went to meet you and now she's on a bed with a tube in her."

"She went to meet me with a check for four hundred thousand dollars and a lease in Port Calder."

"Don't."

"She wanted me out of town again."

"Don't do this to her. Not again."

People in the corridor had stopped to look: a nurse at the desk, a man with a cane, two women holding a vending machine coffee each.

I felt the old heat in my chest, the one I had learned to swallow.

I did not swallow it.

"Four years ago I stood at the bottom of those stairs and nobody asked me a single question," I said. "You picked her up and looked at me. You never once said, Ivy, what happened."

"I saw her fall."
