Chapter 29: Sunday Table

"Ask," I said.

Vanessa looked past me into the house, at the boxes, at the trail of clothes down the hall.

"Can I come in first? These coffees are burning my hand."

I let her in.

She set the kolaches on a box of books and handed me a coffee, and kept the other one.

Then she took a breath.

"Mom moved out of the house last night," she said. "To a condo on the seawall. She left me the keys on the hall table."

I held the coffee and didn't drink it.

"I want to have Sunday dinner there tomorrow. Like Daddy used to. You, and Dorinda, and him." She nodded down the hall.

"And I don't know if I'm supposed to ask her."

From the bedroom, Noah called, "I can hear you, Vanessa."

"Good," she called back. "Put a shirt on. Oh wait, she's wearing it."

I put the coffee down.

"Don't ask her," I said. "Not yet."

My sister looked at me for a long moment.

"Okay," she said. "Not yet."

She didn't argue, and I loved her for it more than for anything she'd done all month.

The dining room on Broadway smelled like scorched flour at six o'clock on Sunday.
