Chapter 18: Detective
The Columbus police station smelled of floor wax and burnt coffee.
We went in on Wednesday morning, my father, Hannah and I, through a glass door with a paper sign taped to it.
The detective had a corner desk and a small gray mustache.
He read my mother's complaint first, in silence, then looked up at me over it.
"She says you took one hundred thousand dollars from a joint account," he said.
"The figure was sixty-one."
"Then she's wrong about the number." He turned a page. "Tell me about the account."
"I opened it at nineteen with my mother, so she could pay bills while I was at school."
"And who paid in?"
"I did. Every month. Ten years."
"And who took money out?"
"She did. Last Thursday she moved sixty-one thousand dollars to another account."
I put Hannah's folder on the desk.
He opened it and went through the statements one at a time. He didn't hurry.
When he reached the page with my mother's private account, he took out a pen.
"This is under her name only."
"Yes."
"And there's another transaction here. One hundred forty thousand from a retirement fund. Mr. Kettering?"
My father sat very straight in the plastic chair.
"That was my pension," he said. "She told me it was lost."
"Did you authorize the withdrawal?"
"No."
"Did you sign anything?"
"I signed what she put in front of me." He looked at his hands. "I always have."
"Dad," Hannah said softly.
"No." He lifted his head. "Let him write it down. I signed what she put in front of me for thirty-one years, and my son nearly paid for it with his body."
The detective's pen stopped.
"What do you mean, his body?"
