Chapter 6: The Envelope

"Stay up here," Ethan said.

He took the cane from beside the bed and went down the stairs.

I stayed for a moment.

Then I put on his sweater from the chair, which came to my knees, and followed him to the landing where the banister hid me from the hall.

Gilbert stood in the open front door with rain on his shoulders.

He had a bottle in one hand, and he held the doorframe with the other.

"Little brother," he said. "Having a sleepover?"

"It's midnight, Gilbert."

"Father's drawing up the papers. I wanted you to hear it from me." He grinned. "The house goes to me on your wedding day, if she turns out to be a bad investment."

"The house goes to me on my wedding day. That was the deal."

"Deals change."

"Not this one."

Gilbert took a step in and Ethan did not move back.

I could see the back of Ethan's neck.

It was rigid.

"Don't you want to know why Father's so ready to change it?" Gilbert said. "I told him you were drinking again."

"I'm not."

"You were on the night of the crash."

My hand closed on the banister.

"You told them that," Ethan said.

"Because you told them it was you driving." Gilbert laughed, quietly, and swayed. "You've been so good about it. Two years, and not a word. I let you keep the limp, and you keep the story. That's fair. That's what brothers do."

"Get out."

"I'm only saying you owe me."
