Chapter 14: The Spare Key

I took the toothbrush out of my mouth.

"No," I said.

"I didn't say anything yet."

"You're going to ask to come in. No."

Jace looked over his shoulder at the parking lot.

His SUV wasn't there. He'd walked.

"Brody's on a houseboat with my brother," he said. "Down at the marina. He rented it for three nights on his dad's card. He saw the black car when we drove in."

"And he sent you."

"He doesn't know I'm here."

I stepped out onto the walkway and pulled the door shut behind me, so he couldn't see my room.

The walkway was busy for ten at night.

A family was fighting with the ice machine. Two truckers were smoking on the railing a few doors down. A woman in a bathrobe was walking a tiny white dog.

Down at the far end, a door opened.

Sawyer stood in it in his shirtsleeves.

I looked at him and shook my head, once.

He stayed where he was. He folded his arms and leaned on the door frame, and he didn't come one step closer.
