Chapter 19: Not Moving the Date

Molly's POV

"You went without me," I said again.

Mitch put his phone down on the island between us.

"I did."

"You promised."

"I know what I promised." He didn't try to touch me. "I couldn't stand there while you read it. I thought if I got to him first I could bring you something other than that page."

"So you decided what I could hear."

"Yes."

He didn't dress it up.

That was why I let him press play.

My father's voice came out of the little speaker, warm and tired, the voice that read me Walter's stories when I was small.

*Over water, Mitch. Not before.*

I sat through the whole recording with my hands flat on the counter.

When it got to the part about the grieving father, Mitch turned his face away.

When the tape stopped, I stared at the recorder.

"He thinks I can't," I said.

"Molly," Mitch said.

"He thinks I won't say it to a judge."

"You don't have to decide tonight," Mitch said. "We can push the wedding to February and let the agents find him first."

"No."

"Molly, he wants you at that hangar on the thirty-first."

"Then he doesn't get to move my date," I said.

I picked up my phone.

The inspector's card was in the pocket of my coat, with a number in blue ink on the back.
