Chapter 18: Orrin on the Stage

Nobody stopped him.

Orrin walked down the whole length of the aisle with his cane, past six hundred people, and his cane marked each step in the silence.

Dane stood up in the front row.

Orrin shook his head without looking at him.

He climbed the stage steps one at a time, with his free hand on the rail, and when he reached the top he stood for a moment with his chest rising and falling.

I held out my arm.

I don't know why.

He looked at it, and then he took it, and let me bring him to the microphone.

"Miss Brubaker," he said.

"Mr. Haverly."

"I would like to speak. If you'll permit it."

I looked at the room.

Phones were up.

I looked at the dean, who was white, and at the general counsel, and at the chair, and at Cleo, who had put her face in her hands.

"You can say what you want," I said. "It's your voice."

He turned to the microphone.

He was seventy-six years old, and he had been the most respected man in a town of fifty thousand people for forty years.
