Chapter 11: The Seat Wolf

Headlights swept the dock, and a car door slammed.

Then another, and another.

Ronan flinched, and I did not take my eyes off him.

I heard Darius before I saw him.

He ran down the length of the pier in his shirtsleeves, with the rain in his black hair, and he stopped ten feet from me.

Eli and Nico came behind him, breathing hard.

Darius looked at the clothes in a heap on the planks.

He looked at the small white wolf standing over them.

His face went completely blank.

"Mara," he said.

I let out a low sound in my throat, and he did not come any closer.

He slowly stripped off his coat.

He did not throw it, and he did not hold it out.

He laid it on the planks and stepped back from it, three paces, with his hands open.

I understood.

I padded over, and I put my nose on the heavy wool.

Then I turned around and let the change go.

It was easier going back.

My bones ran the other way, and I was crouching on the boards in the wet with Darius's coat dragged round me, my bare knees to my chest and my hair stuck to my face.

No one looked at me.

All the men on that pier had turned their heads away.

"You didn't know," Ronan said hoarsely. He was looking at Darius. "You didn't know what she was."

"What is she?"

"She's..."

"She's the Seat."

The voice came from the dark behind the cars.

Silas walked out of the rain with an umbrella over his head and three of the council behind him.

The thin elder was one of them, white-faced.

Silas did not seem surprised.

He did not seem surprised at all.

"A white wolf is born once in a generation," Silas said, "in one family in a thousand. We call her the Seat, because she is what the wolves sit under. Her word outranks an Alpha's. A pack that has her yes has her, and a pack that has her yes is one pack."
