Chapter 29: Chairman Ryu

Seo-jun watched the chairman's hand close over the edge of the lectern.

It was an old man's hand, spotted, with a gold ring on the third finger.

For twenty-four years it had rested on his shoulder.

"Ladies and gentlemen," said Ryu Tae-gyu, in the calm bass voice of every Sunday dinner. "Please be seated. This is a day of grief, and I will not have it become a spectacle."

Nobody sat.

"My wife is unwell," the chairman went on. "She has suffered a great strain, and has mixed together memories and fears. A cook with a grievance has played on that strain. I will not ask you to hold either woman responsible."

Sun-hee made a sound in her throat.

Ye-rin's arm tightened around her.

"The group is deeply sorry for the loss of your family members," said the chairman. "I have always been. This foundation exists because of them. Today I would like to do what should have been done long ago."

He lifted one hand, and a man in a dark suit stepped forward from the door with a leather folder.

"Each family will receive two hundred million won from my personal funds. A scholarship in each name. A wing at the new hospital." He looked down the rows of faces. "I ask only that we close this matter with dignity."
