Chapter 18: What She Could Keep
The door behind the study opened onto a kitchen I had never seen.
Sunlight lay across a long oak table, although the real windows still held the night.
There was a deep sink, a wide stove, and a place beside the back door for muddy boots.
I knew immediately where I would put my mug.
That was the unpleasant part.
The house hadn't offered me a throne.
It had offered somewhere I could leave a mug without being told it belonged in the cupboard.
Pippa leaned to see past my shoulder.
"That's a very good sink," she said.
"I know."
"You could wash a whole baking tray in it," Pippa said.
"I know."
Rupert tried to look interested in the plumbing.
He couldn't leave the jewelry cabinet, so his contribution consisted of leaning until the drawer handle caught his cardigan.
The house gave us a view through the kitchen window.
A garden sloped toward a strip of sea, with a washing line in a sheltered corner.
