Rosamund took three folded stockings out of her traveling bag and put two back on the study shelf.
"I don't have three legs," she said.
Rupert looked up from his broken ring.
"Is that something we should have checked?"
She ignored him and offered the spare stocking to the woman carrying the cracked cup.
The woman declined it with considerable dignity.
She was wearing boots.
I brought the stool closer to Pippa and sat beside her.
The fixed shoe had stopped creeping into the floor, but it hadn't come free.
My cousin kept her own hands folded around her scarf.
For once she wasn't preparing to stand whenever somebody wanted something.
"You could all come with us," I told Rosamund.
She paused with one stocking halfway into the bag.
"That is rather what we're hoping," she said.
