The silver cake fork came out of Elaine's handbag wrapped in a shopping list.
She unfolded the paper with offended care.
"I meant to ask about it," she said.
"You've had several opportunities," I replied.
Rupert watched her lower it onto the plate I held.
The moment the fork touched the china, her handbag lost a crease that had begun matching the wall paneling.
My aunt noticed it too.
She set the bag on the floor and checked both arms before picking it up again.
Pippa watched from the stool without offering to retrieve anything.
I put the plate back on the dining table.
Every object my aunt had taken was returned now.
The portrait hung unbroken, and the fork lay where supper had offered its temporary use.
Elaine stood beside the front door.
