Elaine offered to take the house off my hands and kept both hands around her handbag.
I stood beside Pippa with the bell pieces wrapped in the guest towel.
"You could keep it until tomorrow," my aunt said.
"Then let somebody more experienced deal with it."
Rupert looked offended at being overlooked again.
"I said I'd manage it."
"You haven't managed your cup of tea," Elaine replied.
The cup still stood beside the fireplace, untouched since he'd struck the bell.
Its surface had gone gray with cold.
I didn't know whether my aunt meant to help us or acquire another advantage.
I suspected she hadn't separated the two possibilities herself.
Pippa kept her eyes on me.
She wasn't volunteering to make either older relative feel appreciated.
