Chapter 14: The Pieces Returned
The guest towel became the most carefully handled object in the house.
I spread it on the hall table and placed both pieces of the bell on it.
Rupert asked whether wrapping brass in linen would change anything.
"It keeps the pieces where I can see them," I said.
"That has been a problem for you tonight."
He stepped back from the table.
Pippa stood beside me, one shoe still touching the patch of tile she'd become unable to leave.
The house let her shift a little in place.
It didn't let her step beyond it.
I held the bell's broken edges together.
For a moment its shape looked whole again.
I wanted that to be enough so badly that I nearly promised it would be.
Pippa watched my hands and didn't ask for the promise.
"We're going to put it back," I said.
I lifted the handle while she touched the brass.
The upper piece hung from the hook.
