Chapter 20: Midnight
Bastian's POV
I woke because the bed was cold on one side.
It was dark, and the fire had burned down to a red line.
The clock on the mantel said five minutes to midnight.
She was at the window.
She stood in my shirt, with her back to me.
One hand rested on the sill and her dark hair hung loose down her back.
She was looking out at the Street of Lamps.
She had been crying.
I knew it from the line of her shoulders.
I lay still for a breath, and then I got up and pulled on my breeches and crossed the room without speaking.
"I'm sorry," she said, without turning. "I didn't mean to wake you."
"You didn't."
"Liar."
"Yes," I said. "A little."
She laughed, a short wet sound.
I stood behind her, and did not touch her.
