Chapter 24: The Gate
My father came to the gate on the seventh morning after the wedding.
It was raining.
I saw him from the breakfast room window.
He was a big stooped shape in a coat that had once been fine, standing in the street with his hat in his hands.
The porter had not let him in.
"Shall I send him off?" Bastian asked.
He sat at the head of the table in his shirtsleeves with a plate of eggs.
He had not taken his eyes off me since I got up.
"No," I said. "I'll go."
"I'll come."
"Stay and eat. I want you to hear what I say, and I want you to have your breakfast."
I took a lemon cake from the pyramid on the sideboard, and bit it, and went out.
The rain was light and warm.
I stood inside the iron gate, with the bars between us.
My father looked small.
I had not known a man could shrink so much in a week.
His coat hung off him.
His chins had gone slack and gray stubble covered his cheeks, and his rings were gone.
