Chapter 17: My Way

Nobody said anything for a second.

Then the third brother leaned back in his chair.

"Define everybody."

"Everybody," said Mabel. "Her friends. His company. The newspapers. Police."

"Police," said the cop, sounding pained. "She wants it legal."

"I want it so legal she can't buy her way out of it."

Mabel got up and went to the hook by the door.

She took down her red coat and brought it back to the table.

Fern handed her the kitchen scissors without being asked.

Mabel turned the coat inside out and snipped six stitches at the bottom of the hem.

She tipped it.

A tiny silver bracelet slid out onto the tablecloth between the spaghetti and the garlic bread.

MABEL, it said, in curling letters.

The doctor picked it up with two fingers, very gently.

He held it next to the thin white line around her wrist.

It matched exactly.

Fern made a sound.

"That's why she grabbed you."

"She searched me." Mabel shrugged. "She didn't search the hem. Rich people never think about hems."

Grandpa laughed so hard he had to wipe his eyes with his napkin.

"Okay," said the third brother. He pulled his laptop out of his backpack and opened it. "Okay. I'm in. What's the plan, boss?"

Mabel sat back down.

She had planned in her head for three years, mostly about how to stay hidden.
