Chapter 15: Rook Comes Down
I did not go to the house.
I slept that night in the hut on the old camp cot, with a blanket from the shed and the stove stoked up to red, because the house still smelled of my mother's absence and I wasn't ready for it.
My father had said everything in the first ten minutes.
The second paper was the only new thing, the one Cyrus had put on his desk in a camel coat and called an irregularity.
"I didn't know," he'd said.
"Dally, I swear to God I didn't know what it was."
"You didn't ask," I said.
I had not yet decided what to do with him.
I'd put him in bed and put the bottle in the shed and turned the paper face down on the desk where he could not see it.
I had a plan for him.
It would take a day, and a pen, and a good deal more calm than I owned.
I lay on the cot with the diary on my chest and my mother's ring turning on my finger.
I heard the gate at midnight.
It was not Cyrus's car.
I knew his engine, a low smooth purr like money.
This was a boot on frozen mud, one man, walking slowly, the way a man walks who intends to be heard.
I sat up.
"Dally?" Rook said, outside.
"It's me.
"I'm at the gate.
"I won't come in the yard unless you say."
I did not answer.
I pulled my coat over my shoulders and went to the hut door and opened it a hand's breadth.
He stood in the light from the shed lamp with his jacket collar up and his hands visible, on either side of him, open.
