Chapter 25: The Answer
"Walk with me," I said.
We walked down Harbor Road in the rain, past the dark co-op and the church, to the harbor wall.
Behind us the grange hall was still roaring. Somebody had found a fiddle.
The harbor wall was where every island kid learned to fish, and kiss, and drink beer they'd stolen from their fathers.
I'd sat on it at fifteen and told my mother I was going to be a pilot.
Pierce sat down on the wet granite in his good suit. I sat a few feet away.
The boats rocked at their moorings. My father's boat was among them, white in the dark.
"You don't have to say it nicely," he said. "I'd understand."
"I'm going to say it nicely anyway. You did a hard thing tonight."
He waited.
"No," I said. "There isn't a chance. Not tonight, not in the spring, not after you've been good for a year."
He nodded slowly, looking at the water.
"Is it him?"
"It isn't him. If Sawyer Kinney had never come down those stairs, it'd still be no."
"Then why?"
I thought about how to say it.
"For five years I waited for you to pick me," I said. "You never did."
