Chapter 17: The Gala

Sabine's POV

The gala hall smelled of champagne and fear.

Two hundred shareholders sat at long white tables under a banner that read KETTLEWELL AEROWERKS, and the screens behind the head table showed a single page with my family's crest at the top.

I had filed it that morning from the back seat of a car.

Corbin stood at the head table in his pale suit with no tie, and he saw me in the doorway.

His boyish smile came on.

"Sabine," he said into the microphone. "Everyone, a misunderstanding."

"The founding capital of this company was the Ardrey blood-compensation," I said. "The foundation fund holds sixty percent of your voting shares. I won the fund in the Circle five days ago."

I walked down the aisle between the tables.

"I'm using my vote."

Murmurs ran along the rows.

"You can't," Corbin said. "The board hasn't certified the transfer."

"The board is sitting in the front row, and they certified it this afternoon."

Three men at the front table would not meet his eyes.

Corbin's smile slid, and what was under it was small and mean.

"Everything you have, you have because I let you," he said, off the microphone, but loud enough. "Three years you cooked in my kitchen and begged me for scraps of attention. You were a stray."

"I was your largest investor," I said. "I paid for the kitchen."

Somebody near the back laughed, quickly cut off.

Garrow stood by the exit door with his arm still in the cast.

He pushed off the wall and started down the side aisle toward me.

The sergeant from my old unit stepped out of the crowd and stood in front of him.
