Chapter 18: Ninety Days
The war room at Blackmoor was a long stone hall with a map table and no windows.
I slammed the door and the lamps shook.
"You gave the Council the border," I said. "You gave them my parents' graves. You did it while I slept in your bed."
"I did it while you slept in the spring."
"That is worse."
He stood on the far side of the map table with his coat still on.
"You were never asked, Sabine," he said. "Not by the Council. Not by your father's paper. I wanted you to have one thing nobody had arranged."
"I had it. I wrote the terms myself."
"With a war behind them."
"And now you've taken the war away and given me a door." I pointed at it. "Walk out in ninety days with nothing owed. Is that your gift?"
"Yes."
"I don't want it."
He went quiet.
"I spent three years in a man's house waiting to be chosen," I said. "Everyone in my life has decided what I could bear and handed me the shape of it. Corbin. The Council. My father. You, Mathis."
"I know."
"You don't ask. You arrange. You do the noble thing in a closed room and call it a gift."
His hands closed on the edge of the map table.
"If I'd asked," he said, low, "you'd have said no. And I would have had to stand there."
"Yes. You would have."
"I could not."
It was the plainest thing he had ever said to me.
Neither of us moved.
"Ask me," I said.
"Ask you what."
"Anything. Ask me something you're afraid of."
He looked at me for a long time.
"Do you want to stay?" he said.
My throat closed.
"Not for the Accord. Not for the border. If every paper burned tonight."
