Chapter 19: The Border

We reached the Eastern Border an hour before sunrise, and the war was already burning on the ridge.

Blackmoor's frontier posts were on fire.

Wolves in the old black coats of Mathis's father's war guard were coming down through the pines.

There were hundreds of them, and they carried Council rifles with new stocks.

Mathis's line was breaking.

I could see it from the road.

His wolves were bunched on open ground in the valley, shifting and firing wild, and the ridge above them belonged to the enemy.

"Who commands here?" I said.

"I do," Mathis said. "It is going badly."

"Give it to me."

He looked at me.

I had not asked as an Alpha or as a lover.

I had asked as the woman who had held this exact border for six years.

"Yours," he said.

I stepped out of the truck and raised my voice.

"Iron Fang!"

The eleven came out of the line of cars at a run.

The sergeant reached me first, and I took her rifle.

"Eastern spur," I said. "Take the three best shots and get above their flank. Fire on the officers only."

"Yes, Commander."

The word went through me like a bell.

"Draycott's wolves, listen to me!" I shouted down the valley. "Fall back to the drainage cut. Keep the creek bed between you and the ridge. Anyone who stops to fight in the open dies there."
