Then I said what I wanted, because it was the only way I knew to say anything.
"I'm going to live with Grandma for a year."
My father did not flinch.

"I want to go to a school where nobody has seen that video."
"All right."
"I'm not saying forever. I'm saying a year. I don't know what I'll say after that, and I won't pretend to."

"I'm still angry at you."

"Don't tell me you understand. You don't. Not all of it."
"No," he said. "I don't. I'm going to spend the rest of my life learning how much."
From the dining room doorway, a small voice said, "Can I come?"
