Chapter 23: Eighteen
My grandmother's lawyer came to the kitchen table at eight on Saturday morning with a paper still warm from the printer.
"A judge signed this at eleven last night," she said. "In her robe, in her own kitchen."
She slid it across to me.
It was an order vacating the finding against me, in two pages, with a seal.
"Kendra's statement, the cash and the pawn shop video were enough.
"A vacated finding is no finding at all. The clause never applied."
"And the sale?"
"Your stepmother sold what your father never owned. He voted those shares. He did not hold them."
She snapped her case shut.
"The agreement is a piece of paper, Sonia. As of midnight, you are eighteen, and the shares are yours."
I sat very still.
It did not feel like winning.
It felt like putting down something heavy I had not known my arms were still holding.
By evening the house was bright.
My grandmother had been in the kitchen since noon, with Peter on a stool beside her and flour on both of them.
She had brought the yellow tablecloth from Sandusky, and she spread it over the dining table.
