Chapter 22: The Vote

At four o'clock every phone in the boardroom was face up on the table.

The luncheon had been filmed from six angles, and by now the whole city had watched it.

I sat against the glass wall with my grandmother on one side and her lawyer on the other.

The lawyer was a short woman in a brown suit who had driven from Sandusky with a rolling case and no small talk.

My father sat at the table's foot, alone, with his hands folded.

Kendra sat in the hall outside on a bench.

I had walked her to the elevator myself, and I had not held her hand.

The chairman called the meeting to order in a tired voice.

"Item three. A motion to remove Gordon Hartley as chief executive officer. Discussion?"

"I would like to say something," my father said.

"Gordon."

"Only that I won't contest it."

Nobody in the room had expected that.

He stood, and he took the plastic keycard from his breast pocket and set it on the polished table.

"I ran this company for nineteen years. I did not run my family. Vote how you think it's right."
