Chapter 16: Dinner with the Uncle
My phone buzzed while I was still in the cab.
"ARE YOU INSANE," Lexie wrote. Then, a second later: "Share your location. Every 20 min. I mean it."
I shared it.
Then I put on lip gloss in the cab's window and got out.
Rino's restaurant was an old place on Arctic Avenue with red leather booths and pictures of Sinatra on every wall.
Nobody gave me a menu.
The waiter just walked me to the back booth, where Rino sat facing the door.
He stood up when he saw me.
He kissed both my cheeks.
"Sweetheart. Look at you. You came."
"You said dinner. I like dinner."
I'd worn the only black dress I owned that wasn't a uniform, and my biggest gold hoops.
I wanted to look like a girl who wanted things.
It wasn't hard. I always want things.
He'd already ordered for both of us. Clams, veal, a bottle of red.
He poured me a glass and pushed it across.
I looked at it.
Then I looked at him.
"Sparkling water," I said. "The baby's expensive. So am I."
He smiled.
"You don't drink. You don't flinch. You give back checks in front of my nephew's men."
"I gave it back in front of witnesses. That's not the same as not wanting it."
He liked that even more.
The clams came. They were good. I hated that they were good.
"Ciro tells me you're partners," Rino said. "Fifty-fifty."
"That's right."
"Fifty percent of what? My nephew doesn't own a thing, sweetheart. The family owns the restaurants. The family owns the house in Margate. The family owns his suits."
"And who owns the family?"
