Chapter 18: The Scare

Ciro drove to the hospital.

I sat with my phone pressed to my ear the whole way.

"Talk to me, Lex."

"There's not that much," she said. "I stood up from Cillian's couch and there was blood. Not a lot. Enough."

"We're ten minutes out."

"Trix." Her voice went very small. "What if it's Peanut?"

"Then we'll deal with it together. Like everything."

"Term three," she whispered.

"Term three."

The ER was bright and cold and smelled like hand sanitizer.

Cillian was standing outside a curtained bay with his back to the wall.

His coat was wet. His hands were empty. He looked like he'd been carved there.

A man with a shaved head stood next to him, holding two coffees nobody had touched.

Cillian's number two. I'd seen him driving the gray car outside our building.

"Whalen," Ciro said.

Cillian looked at him and nodded once.

I didn't wait for anybody. I pushed through the curtain.

Lexie was sitting up in the bed in a blue gown, her bob flat on one side, holding the rails.

"I wore my good earrings," she said. "To the ER. Who does that?"
