Chapter 11: Mine
They did not sleep that night, and they did not run.
They sat on the broken floor of Room Seven until dawn and talked in whispers about everything but the Stone.
The next day, the instructors kept Tae-gang for four hours.
They asked how a farm boy broke a sword with his hand, and he said, "Good wrists."
They said Chang-min had been expelled, and his father had been sent a letter, and that was all they would say.
By the time the bell rang for evening, Tae-gang's head ached with lying.
He pushed open the door of Room Seven.
Seo-hwan sat in the middle of the warm floor, in his shirtsleeves, with the lamp turned low.
He had fixed the split paper on the door with strips of rice glue.
He had put a clean quilt on the boards.
His hair was down.
On the table beside him lay a pair of round new spectacles, bought from the pedlar at the gate.
"The glass in these is real," he said. "I can't see a thing."
"Take them off, then."
"I will."
Seo-hwan stood.
The shirt hung open, and the base of his throat was dark with Tae-gang's marks, six or seven of them, overlapping.
He had stopped covering them.
"Tomorrow morning," he said quietly, "the Stone will tell the whole hall what we are."
"If it does, we'll be on opposite sides of the Alliance Council by sundown."
"I know."
"If it doesn't, we get a little more time."
"I know."
"So tonight," Seo-hwan said. "Tonight I don't want to be a Crane, and you don't have to be a Tiger."
