Chapter 24: Plaza Midwood
I picked up the key.
It was lighter than it looked, and warm from the lamp.
I held it for a while, turning the faded ribbon in my fingers.
Then I reached across the table and put it in Cordelia's hand.
"It isn't mine to give," I said.
"It was always yours."
"Use it on Sunday."
Her fingers closed around the brass.
She did not say anything, and for once I could not read her face because it had too much on it.
The second Sunday in December was the first cold one, with a hard blue sky over Central Avenue and frost on the porch rail.
I was at the stove in my mother's apron when the front door opened without a knock.
A key turned in the lock, stiff from disuse, and caught, and turned.
Cordelia came in stamping her shoes on the mat.
She carried a paper sack in each arm.
"Onions," she said.
"I counted."
"That's four pounds of onions."
"I counted twice."
She hung her raincoat on the hook by the door, the one my mother used for her scarves.
