Chapter 13: Who Is Birdie

"Not here," I said.

Jack was forty feet away with my daughter's best friend on his shoulders, and he was laughing at something Max had said.

I took Bridget by the elbow and walked her around the corner of the pool house, where the hedge hid us from the water.

She let me.

That was the worst part.

She had always been the one who pulled me out of rooms, and now she walked where I pushed.

"You had a thousand chances to tell me," I said.

"I know."

"You watched me pack to run. You helped me pack."

"I thought if I said it then, you'd never let me fix it."

"Fix it?" My voice cracked in the middle. "Preston's people came to the door. Poppy ate a popsicle on a stranger's lap. I stood in a bakery and lost my home in an hour."

"And you got him."

"Don't," I said.

She flinched.

"Don't you dare hand me that as a gift. I didn't pick this. You picked it for me, and you did it behind a phone you kept face down for a year."

Her face crumpled.

"You said whichever airport I chose, you'd be on the plane," I said. "I never knew you got off at the first stop."

"I'm sorry."

"I know you are."

"Han, I'll tell Jack tonight. I'll tell him everything."

"You'll tell him today," I said. "Before he finds out from somebody else."

"He'll leave."

"Then he leaves, and you knew that when you pressed the button."

She wiped her nose with the back of her wrist, the way she did when we were twenty.

I walked away before I did something I couldn't take back, like hug her.
