Chapter 20: Dinner
He cooked on Thursday.
I hadn't known he could.
He stood at the new stove in the penthouse kitchen with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
He stirred a pan of garlic and tomatoes and hummed something off-key.
I sat on the counter and ate olives out of the jar.
"Your hands," I said.
"What about them?"
"I keep thinking about what they do all day. And then they do this."
"This is easier. Nobody bleeds if I overcook the pasta."
"Nobody bleeds if you overcook me either."
He turned, spoon in hand, and gave me a long look.
"Don't tempt me before the sauce is done."
I laughed.
The long wooden table had been set for two.
It held real plates, a candle and a bowl of strawberries.
He carried the pasta over and pulled out my chair, and I sat, and he sat across from me, and we ate.
It was the best meal of my life.
It wasn't the food.
It was the way he watched me eat.
It was the way he refilled my water, and the way his foot found mine under the table and stayed there.
