Chapter 8: The Overlook
Gran's lawyer met us on Monday in a diner, because he was eighty-one and refused to meet anywhere else.
He put a manila folder on the table and a cup of tea in front of me.
"You now hold fifty-one percent of the voting shares of Pemberton Marine," he said.
"They vested on the third of October, in your name alone."
"My father believes it vests at thirty."
"He'll find out."
"Not from me. You asked me to keep quiet in the spring, and I kept quiet."
"I still want you to."
"Until when?"
I looked at Lachlan, who sat beside me with his hand around my knee under the table, saying nothing.
"Until the fourteenth," I said. "The gala."
The old man smiled slowly.
"Gran would have enjoyed that," he said.
He gave me a card with a number I would call for any reason.
We left, and Lachlan took the long way home.
He drove the Volvo up the winding road to the overlook above the harbor.
