Chapter 16: Gus

Gus got a piece of every payment, and I had eaten Christmas dinner in his brick house on the hill thirty times.

I knocked once and went in without waiting, the way I always had.

He was at the table in his undershirt with a pot of coffee and a Bible he wasn't reading.

He looked at my face, and then at the plaque in the grocery bag under my arm.

He said nothing at all.

I put the index card on the table, in front of his coffee cup.

He put one big hand over his eyes.

"Sit down, Bee," he said.

"I'll stand."

"Then stand."

"I came alone," I said. "Hank's in the truck. I wanted you to answer me without anyone watching."

"That's kind."

"It isn't. It's so you can't say you were pushed."

He took his hand away from his face.

His eyes were red, and I knew he had been sitting at that table since before dawn.

"Ask," he said.

"Why?"

"There were eleven of us at the clubhouse that night," Gus said. "Eleven, with the party in full swing. Most of the men had ridden in drunk, and some of them were going to ride out. Two had warrants they hadn't mentioned. One was on probation."

"That's the club."

"That's the club." He nodded slowly. "When Travis called me, I knew what a police report would do. Travis would go to prison for years. And the state would look at everyone who'd been in that building. The charter would be gone. The clubhouse note was in your father's name and mine. We'd have lost it."

"So you traded my brother for a building."

"I traded him for a hundred men and their families, God help me," he said. "I told myself that."

"And Travis?"

"I told myself Travis was a boy who'd made one mistake. And if I put the blame on Danny, no one lost anything but a name. And the dead don't read plaques."
