Chapter 21: Blame
Nobody in the crane cab said a word.
The tall one turned the radio off with one finger, very carefully.
Nolan sat in the passenger seat wrapped in the tarp, my gloves on his hands.
He looked at the dark screen.
"Mae watches that channel," he said. "Before school. Every morning."
The schools were closed for the flood.
She'd watched it at the firehouse, on the big TV over the coffee urn, sitting next to Opal.
The police came to the farmhouse at two that afternoon.
Two officers. One was the young one who'd cuffed me on Church Street and said he was sorry.
"Mr. Wadsworth. We have to ask you some questions about the dam."
"Ask," Nolan said.
He sat at his own kitchen table in dry clothes, his knuckles scraped raw, a bruise coming up purple along his jaw from the gate.
I stood behind his chair.
Mae was halfway up the stairs, holding the banister with both hands.
Opal sat on the step below her and held her ankle.
"Spaulding filed a complaint this morning," the older officer said. "They say you had access to the dam after you were fired."
