Chapter 32: The Falls
I wasn't early.
I sat in the Subaru at the bottom of the dam road for twenty minutes so I wouldn't be.
At dusk I climbed the access stairs.
The catwalk had a new grate now, galvanized steel, bolted down tight. The east gate stood in its fresh racks, greased black and shining.
The falls ran over the spillway in a long white sheet, and the whole valley below was going blue.
Nolan stood in the middle of the catwalk in a clean flannel shirt.
"You're not early," he said.
"You told me not to be."
He laughed, and it came out wrong, too high. He rubbed his hands on his jeans.
"Are you okay?"
"No," he said. "Give me a minute."
I waited.
Below us, way down at the bottom of the dam road, I could see his truck parked behind my car.
Two small faces were pressed against its windshield.
One of them was wearing a rain bonnet, in May, with no rain.
"Nolan. Is my grandmother in your truck?"
"She was supposed to stay home."
"Is Mae in your truck?"
"She was supposed to stay with your grandmother." He shut his eyes. "That's what happened. She stayed with your grandmother."
